Description of Services

The Boone Special Education Cooperative’s Boone County Youth at Work program provides Special Education youth from Belvidere and North Boone High Schools with work readiness skills training and work opportunities. During the school year the youths’ math, reading/English, vocational training, and tutoring (one period each) are part of their regular school day program. WIA supplements the youths’ school program with work readiness training and work experience opportunities. Youth will be placed in subsidized, unsubsidized, or volunteer work at least 15 hours per week, receiving extensive job coaching and support.

During the summer, the youth participate in a special summer component of the program that combines classroom activities (basic skills work, work readiness skills) and work activities on Belvidere School District properties and other sites. During the work component of the program, the youth work in teams, under the close supervision of program staff, performing project-based activities.
